Serum Or Moisturizer?

The skin contains three layers:

Both serum and moisturizers help the skin differently. 

The serum contains a high concentration of specific active ingredients, such as antioxidants, vitamins, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and brightening agents. Generally, serums are water-based and have a transparent gel or liquid-like texture. It has a lighter consistency with the exclusion of occlusive ingredients and fewer lubricating and thickening agents. 

With the thin, lightweight, and smaller molecules, a serum can penetrate the deeper layer of skin (dermis), allowing the skin tissues to absorb the nutrients faster and effectively. Moisturizer is usually in the form of gel, lotion, or cream, which contains an emulsion of water, humectants, skin hydrating emollients, and oil. It has a thicker, denser consistency with larger molecules, helps to condition the upper layer of skin (epidermis), and strengthens the skin barrier from irritation and infection. The moisturizer also helps to lock moisture and nutrients in the layer underneath by creating a physical barrier to keep the skin moisture from evaporating.

If your skin is hydrated and resilient, a moisturizer alone will be adequate for your skin. However, when time goes by, the needs of your skin change, you may require both serum and moisturizer in your skincare regime to address different skin concerns.
